  • By the end of 2017, The Arc of Somerset County’s Jerry Davis Center for Children and Families (JDCCF) will have an outdoor sensory activity classroom for its developmental daycare and pre-school facility, located at 141 South Main St., thanks to a volunteer initiative by the Leadership Somerset Class of 2017.

Leadership Somerset is an adult community leadership program for people who live or work in Somerset County. The volunteer leadership group will embark on a volunteer project that will benefit the children enrolled in the early childhood development program. The leadership team’s goal is to design, create and install an Outdoor Sensory Activity Classroom at the center’s existing outdoor facility playground. The mission of The Jerry Davis Center for Children and Families is to ensure every child’s optimal growth and development with comprehensive, interdisciplinary programs that are designed to meet the physical, cognitive, social and emotional needs of children who have a diverse range of abilities and who may live at or below poverty level.

The outdoor classroom will be composed of mostly up-cycled materials that can be transformed into an affordable and sustainable full sensory curriculum that is required by the JDCCF’s Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS). QRIS is a systematic approach to assess, improve and communicate the level of quality in early and school-age care and education programs. On Thursday, August 10th, Mayor Richard M. Onderko for the Borough of Manville came to visit the project area at The Jerry Davis Center for Children and Families and to offer his sincere best wishes on the project.

“We are thrilled to be chosen for this year’s Leadership Somerset Class of 2017 program and it is a wonderful opportunity for the program to make a significant impact on the children that we serve”, stated Lauren Frary, Executive Director for The Arc of Somerset County. “We are excited to be a part of the process and look forward to using the new sensory classroom soon”

Each year, participants are required to complete a class project that gives back to the community. The Leadership Somerset Class of 2017 selected The Arc of Somerset County’s project proposal and members are working closely with JDCCF staff to assemble the appropriate materials required to benefit the children and the center. Applications for the Class of 2018 are currently being accepted. The deadline is Oct. 31. Open house events are scheduled on Sept. 27 and Oct. 4. • The Arc of Somerset County Receives Grant for Accessible Music Program for Individuals with Disabilities

The Arc of Somerset County was recently awarded a $2,500 grant by for their “Accessing Music Promoting Success” program at their Branchburg Vocational Rehabilitation facility. This program is made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State and administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program Grant.

“Accessing Music Promoting Success” program at The Arc of Somerset County is to promote music access for individuals with disabilities as well as to facilitate social participation and engagement within the context of adaptive music education for diverse learning styles of the individuals served by The Arc. The program was developed to engage and enhance programming options as well as promote social participation and wellness.

Co-Founder/Program Director, Karen Z. Kowalski states, “The “Accessing Music Promoting Success” program promotes a sense of well-being and success for individuals with disabilities through music. Specifically, these individuals have the opportunity to participate in an adaptive, high-tech system that allows them to successfully play music and engage with others, regardless of experience, training, or ability”.

Participants in this small group based program learn music concepts, develop the ability to create music in collaboration with other members of the group and learn music performance skills with the use of a group-participation system based on iPad technology and customized music applications, designed by Co-founder/Technology Director Tom Brislin. Under Kowalski’s direction, the group performs music together by simply touching the iPad, breaking down the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing conventional instruments. Groups play entire songs by following an easy system of cues from the director, and can also improvise and interact with their fellow participants. The flexibility of the system allows for participation with a range of unique learning needs and physical abilities. “It is amazing to see their progress after just nine session and they are all so thrilled to be in the program”, stated Lauren Frary, Executive Director of The Arc of Somerset County.

The Arc of Somerset County provides quality services and advocacy for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to support development and achievement at every stage of life. For more information about the “Accessing Music Promoting Success” program at The Arc of Somerset County’s Branchburg Vocational Rehabilitation facility, please call 908-725-8544 ext: 604 or visit www.thearcofsomerset.org.
