Recreational Activities

The Arc of Somerset County is committed to providing recreation opportunities for the individuals we serve. A few examples of activities planned by the Recreation Department and various committees include:

  • Monday "Come and Dance" events - Almost every Monday from September through May, there are dances at the VFW in Manville. A DJ provides music, and punch and snacks are served to attendees. These dances are open to all Arc consumers.

  • Friday night group activities - Every Friday, Arc consumers gather at the Valley Park Adult Training Center in Hillsborough to participate in various group activities. Arts & Crafts, listening to live music, performing science projects, and playing bingo are just a few examples of activities that consumers can participate in at these gatherings.

  • Dinner Dances - There are two dinner dances scheduled each year - one in the Spring and one in the Winter. Attendees enjoy a sit-down dinner and live music.

  • Sisters of The Arc - Women's group that gets together to do various activities such as make bracelets, give and receive manicures, and socialize with one another.

  • Somerset Patriots games - The Arc of Somerset County receives some complementary tickets through the Somerset Patriots Corporate Care Program.

Recreational Activities

In addition to activities with consumers, family members, and staff, The Arc of Somerset County created the Excursion Club to get Arc residents out into the community. The goal of the club is to plan 2 group activities each month that allow consumers the opportunity to become even more involved in their communities.

The Excursion Club leaders thought it was very important to ask the consumers what they wanted to do. They compiled an impressive list of desired destinations and activities including trips to Atlantic City, the Camden Aquarium, Six Flags Great Adventure, Circle Line Cruise, and the NJ shore. Past events include a trip to the Philadelphia Zoo, group dinners at Red Lobster & I-Hop, various bowling parties, and a picnic at Round Valley Park.
